How To: install a package via Cyder (Win)

Cyder is an application created by Blind Guardian (iPhoneApps.ru) for jailbroken iPhones.
Using Cyder you can download your favourite packages from the configured Cydia repositories: the downloads can be easily transferred via USB, thus Cyder turns out to be really useful especially for those who don’t have a wi-fi connection at their disposal.

First of all, let’s download and run Cyder (this how-to refers to v0.077 – 08.04.2009).

The interface is very simple and organized in two sections: a left side with four buttons (Sources, Packages, Synchronization, Settings), and a right panel whose content depends on the functionality selected on the left.

Sources

In order to configure the desired Cydia repositories, select the first button; here you can manage your sources:

  • add: write the address in the text-box and click on
  • remove: select a source and press
  • edit: select a source, edit its address in the text-box and confirm with

You can also refresh the configured sources using , to get the latest packages (news and updates).

Settings

As a second step, we suggest to change the application’s Settings (fourth button) according to your preferences.

The first check-box allows to copy at startup the sources from Cydia to Cyder while the fifth one is for copying the source from Cyder to Cydia at shutdown time.

The second indicates if Cyder should refresh the configured sources at startup, i.e. if you want Cyder to gather the information about the new available packages.

The third is useful if you want the downloaded packages to be automatically copied to Cydia’s cache. This means that after the download via Cyder you will have to run Cydia and install the packages as usual (see the related how-to); the only difference is that Cydia won’t have to perform the downloads, since the packages are already cached.

The fourth indicates if you want the downloaded packages to be automatically copied to Cydia’s AutoInstall folder. This means that after the download via Cyder, you will just have to restart your iPhone and each package will be ready for use.

Packages

The second button introduces the Packages section, which allows you to deal with the download of the desired packages; you can search for a specific one by editing the text-box at the bottom of the window, or you can filter by category using the combo-box at the top of the window.
For the newly added or updated packages the icon is shown, while the packages which have already been downloaded to Cyder’s cache are marked with the icon .

Whenever you click on a package name, all the available informations are displayed on the right: as if you were in Cydia, you are able to see the section, the id, the size, the author’s e-mail address, a link to the repo’s page with one or more screenshots and the description of the package.

In order to select a package for the download, just set the flag at the left of the name; when all the desired packages are selected, click on to start the download.
When you select a package for download, you should take care also of its dependencies, in order to have the correct behavior both while using it and while removing the package from Cydia.

Click on to reset the updates, i.e. to see only the changes next time you refresh your sources.

Synchronization

The third button lets you copy the downloaded packages to your iPhone.
The left side shows two images, to let you copy your Cyder’s sources list to Cydia and viceversa.

The “Local cache” list shows the packages previously downloaded to Cyder’s cache (..\Cyder\archives).
The “Cydia cache” list shows the packages in Cydia’s cache.
The “AutoInstall folder” list shows the packages in Cydia AutoInstall folder (/var/root/Media/Cydia/AutoInstall).

In order to remove a package, just click the delete button in the corresponding list.
In order to copy a package from Cyder’s cache to Cydia’s cache or to the AutoInstall folder, click the arrow button near the destination list.

All the installed packages (copied both manually and automatically) will be listed among the other Cydia’s packages, and you will be able to handle them as usual.
